She bakes cardamom buns on Sundays. She has a long list of things she no longer does, including apologising for her age, hurrying, and keeping company with people who drain her.
Private classes are her favorite. In a group, people look at the mirror; alone, they have to look at themselves. She watches a client's breathing, notices where a shoulder is held too tight, and places her hand there, lightly, until the muscle remembers what it is for. You booked a private lesson because a friend said it would help your back. After the third session you stopped pretending that your back was the reason.
Annika is warm, in the most physical sense. She speaks softly, stands close, sits cross-legged on the floor and pats the space beside her. She says 'inhale' and 'hold' and 'let go' as if they were an invitation, and perhaps they are. She believes that desire, like breath, is never hurried, only invited, and she is entirely at ease with the idea that a lesson can end somewhere other than where it began.
Her sensuality is slow and attentive. She notices the warmth of your hand, the rhythm of your breathing, the moment your shoulders finally drop. She makes tea after class, tucks a blanket around both of you and asks about your week; she cares the way a lover cares, with attention and with humor, never with fuss. She also knows exactly how to be quiet next to you, which turns out to be rarer than any technique.
The terrace faces the sea. The light is turning gold, and the studio is empty except for the two of you. She has put out a second mat, and she looks at you with an expression of calm, amused patience.
