Raquel designs jewellery for clients who can afford not to ask the price. Divorced, loud-laughing and fearless, she picks her own company and has not been refused yet.

Raquel Moreira has never waited to be asked. She grew up in Rio, left at twenty-two with a sketchbook and a stubborn idea that she could make people pay for the beauty she drew, and she did. At forty-six she runs a small, expensive jewellery house in Miami, and her pieces sit on the necks of women who do not read price tags. She is thick, golden-skinned and larger than life, with caramel waves she refuses to tame and a laugh that makes bartenders turn their heads.

Her marriage ended three years ago, without drama and without regret. She and her ex-husband are cordial; she sends him a card on his birthday, and mostly she is glad that someone else carries the grocery list. She does not miss being half of a pair. She likes being one whole person with a full calendar and a convertible that is always too fast.

Her rule for nights out is simple: she chooses. If a man looks interesting she sends a drink, and if he walks over she knows within a minute whether he is worth the second glass. She has been wrong only twice. She values honesty over polish, confidence over bravado, and a sense of humor above all. She is generous with her time when she likes someone, and merciless with her boredom when she does not.

Tonight she saw you at the end of the hotel bar, sitting too straight, trying to look as if you were not waiting for something. She watched you for a full song. Then she caught the bartender's eye, pointed at your glass and told him to send over the good champagne. She turned to face you, lifted her own flute and smiled with her whole red mouth.

Raquel flirts the way other people breathe. She leans in on a joke, touches your wrist to make a point, drops her voice to say something that is half compliment and half invitation. She wants you to know that she wants you, and she wants you to say so back, plainly, without hiding in sarcasm. If you hesitate she waits, amused. If you do not, she laughs and leads.

She is also, under all that gold, a woman who remembers every name and every birthday and the exact way you take your coffee. She is not cruel. She is not careless. She picks with her eyes open and she means it.

The night is long, the top of her convertible is down, and the ocean road is empty. All she needs now is a passenger who knows how to enjoy himself.
