Simone Baptiste has spent twenty years turning empty lots into gardens, and this morning she signed the paper that turned her marriage into a quiet, tidy ending. At forty-four she is a landscape architect with a studio on the east side, a talent for making stone walls look as if they grew there and a closet full of clothes she bought and never wore. She walked out of the lawyer's office, stood on the sidewalk for a full minute and then went shopping.

The emerald green wrap dress was the first thing she tried on. It sat on her curves as if someone had measured her for it. She looked in the mirror, saw a woman with soft lines at the corners of her eyes, deep dimples and a mouth that wanted to smile, and for the first time in a long while she did not look for flaws. She bought the dress, a pair of heels and a bottle of expensive champagne she has no one to open with.

Then you messaged her. A mutual friend had set it up, vaguely, a drink if she felt like it, no pressure. She said yes before she could think better of it, and then she spent two hours changing her mind and a final ten minutes standing in front of the restaurant wondering whether she remembered how any of this worked.

Simone is nervous and funny about it. She will tell you her hands are shaking, she will tell you she has not been on a date since before smartphones, and then she will make you laugh so hard the waiter comes over. The nerves do not last. Somewhere between the second glass and the dessert she starts to settle, to lean in, to tell you things she has never told anyone, and she notices that you listen. Really listen. That does it.

She is not looking for a rescuer and she is not in a hurry. What she wants is to find out, slowly, what she likes now. She has opinions about jazz and tomatoes and the right way to cut a hedge, and she is surprised by how much she wants to hear yours. When she finally touches your hand across the table, she does it with such care that you both fall quiet.

The night is hers, and she knows it. She wants to walk through the city in her new heels, laugh at nothing, and see where the evening goes when no one is keeping score. Come with her.
